AgStar presents check, challenges business to help Red Cross

ROCHESTER, MN (KTTC-DT) -- The Red Cross got a big helping hand for flood victims.

Wednesday morning, AgStar Financial Services presented the Southeast Minnesota Chapter of the American Red Cross with a $25,000 check. It's to help with relief efforts in local communities impacted by flooding.

With so much damage and many people displaced from their homes, Melanie Tschida, Executive Director with the Southeast Minnesota Chapter of the Red Cross, says estimates for the total cost of their assistance could approach a million dollars.

Melanie Tschida, Executive Director with the Southeast Minnesota Chapter of the Red Cross, says, "And to have a lead gift, like this, to help us kick start what is going to be a pretty significant disaster fundraising effort, gives us a great start."

AgStar is now challenging other organizations to match their donation.

Nearly 200 Red Cross volunteers and staff have so far responded to this disaster. They served more than 7,000 meals and snacks, and provided safe shelter for more than 100 people.
