Gov. Pawlenty to visit Zumbro Falls Sunday

ZUMBRO FALLS, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty will return to southeastern Minnesota Sunday to stop in the flood-stricken town of Zumbro Falls.

Gov. Pawlenty and Emergency Management Director Kris Eide will meet with local officials at 12:30 p.m. and then tour Wabasha County, including Zumbro Falls and Hammond.

In Zumbro Falls, the National Guard is on patrol keeping people a mile away from the city.  All phone service is down, and local authorities are scrambling to come up with plans for basic local government operations.

Authorities are waiting for the floodwaters of the Zumbro River to recede, and they may allow people back to inspect the damage sometime on Saturday.

Zumbro Falls Mayor Alan VanDeWalker says, "We were sandbagging and thought we could stop it but we just could not."

Officials predicted the water in Zumbro Falls would crest late Friday afternoon. Officials say it could take days to recede.
