Fire destroys home in Simpson

SIMPSON (KTTC-DT)-- The state fire marshal is investigating a Tuesday afternoon blaze that destroyed a family's home in Simpson. The fire broke out around 2:30p.m. and spread so quickly that the homeowners and firefighters weren't able to save much of the property.

"The whole place [was] just gone in 15 minutes," said Mike Hedin who owned the home off of Simpson road.

"It's just devastating, I just can't believe it, it was our dream house," he added.

Hedin built the house himself on a secluded piece of land back in 2000, in part because of how peaceful it was being away from everyone else. Unfortunately that made it harder for firefighters to get water to the scene.

"It takes us time to get here, set up our water and then actively extinguish the fire. We're working against that timeline," said Vance Swisher of the Stewartville Fire Department.

The fire was so intense, that at one point billowing black smoke could be seen from as far away as Plainview.

"It's a traumatic experience in their life," Swisher said.

The Hedin's say they have homeowners insurance and are waiting to hear from the state fire marshal as to what may have started the blaze.
