Labor Day exodus

Mazeppa, MN (KTTC-DT) --

The holiday weekend is coming to a close and many people this afternoon were packing up the camping equipment to head home. It was definitely not a bad weekend, a little chilly, but Saturday was glorious. Overall, many said they had a great Labor day weekend.

In fact, the Ponderosa campground manager says the place was packed all weekend, with nearly 100 campsites occupied. It was a far cry from last year after colder than normal weather hindered campers from going outdoors.

"Oh yeah, we were packed. It was busy. It's kind of nice for the weather to cool down a little bit, so maybe not as many jet-skiing out there, but more fishermen. It was busy," says campground manager Waylon Mayer.

With gloomy weather for most of the day today, many campers did take off earlier. Most were gone by 3 Monday afternoon. These folks, though, wanted all the time on the water that they could get. The kids have to go back to school and the parents wanted them to burn off a little energy.

"People were anticipating the return of school right after Labor Day, so we took it easy. We just came out to get a little exercise and burn off a little steam," says parent Scott Krook.

Of course, school starts tomorrow for most students, marking the official end of summer for them.
