DNA samples collected at state fair

New to the fair this year is an area of an ongoing research study. A group of University of Minnesota students and faculty are spending six days collecting DNA samples from children between the ages of two and 11.

The idea is to have those children return to the fair for the next two years for an update.

Workers take blood pressure readings, weight, height and waist measurements and they're also collecting saliva samples.

Optionally, the kids can give fingernail and blood samples.

The study has two main goals.

Logan Spector, Ph.D. , Co-Principal Investigator, says, "We're trying to show that people will participate in studies at the fair and the main goal is to find out what are the genes that underlie healthy growth and development of children."

They will be collecting data from 500 - 2000 children.
