Enrollment numbers strong at RCTC

ROCHESTER, MN (KTTC-DT) -- It's back to the books for students at RCTC, as the new school year began Monday. And for a second year in a row, expected enrollment numbers are looking positive.

This semester's enrollment numbers at RCTC are expected to settle somewhere around 6,000, but staff won't officially know until the 10th day of the semester. That is when they zero in on the official school enrollment, as numbers can still change the first week or so of school.

RCTC's President Don Supalla tells us that the expected fall enrollment is on pace with that of last fall's, which was about 6,000 as well. Last year's was an all-time high, so this fall's enrollment will most likely be close to tying that record enrollment.

Supalla points to several reasons why that is, one of them being the economy.

Don Supalla, President of RCTC says, "And when there aren't a lot of jobs out there, people tend to go back to school, retraining and upgrading is important, so that's a factor."

Supalla says that the college is increasingly drawing in students from high schools within a roughly 35-mile radius from Rochester. Additionally, area high school graduation numbers continue to be strong.

There's another explanation behind the increase as well, partially following along the lines of the economy: the value of education at RCTC's two-year school is tough to beat.

Don Supalla, RCTC President, says, "Individuals are looking at the two-year, local community and technical college, whether it's RCTC or others, as a really good value right now. Our tuition rates are a bit lower, our class sizes are smaller, and I think parents and students are recognizing that."
