ROCHESTER, MINN. (KTTC) -- Rochester will soon change from a second class city to a first class city, defined by a population of 100-thousand or greater. Now, candidates for City Council talked tonight about issues pertinent to Rochester reaching its potential.

The League of Women Voters hosted Candidate Forums for the upcoming City Council elections... a chance for the public to openly chat with the runners. Audience members asked questions about transparency by the council, policies for business to grow, and drug trafficing. The diversity of questions was matched by a diversity of answers. The candidates for Ward 5 were particularly different in their backgrounds from Sankar Bandi, who was a former Mayo Engineer to Randy Staver, who helped fill out tax forms.

The League of Women Voters puts together this event as an opportunity for the public to get a grasp on who is representing them in a more intimate setting. Kathy Maegerlein, President of the League, says "it identifies citizen interest and citizen involvement. That is what we want to encourage".

The primary election is August 10th. The League of Women Voter's website has all the information on the election process and candidate biographies.
