Dodge county fair wraps up

Kasson, MN (KTTC-DT) --

The storms couldn't stop the rides from turning at the Dodge county fair. The event wraps up tonight.

The crazy weather has taken a toll on this year's Dodge county fair. It started out with record humidity, then throughout the weekend, showers interrupted the festivities.

However, since it is the oldest county fair in Minnesota at 153 years old, officials here know how to roll with the punches. But the rain and sticky weather did affect the fair attendance. The Dodge County fair is free, but the board depends on sponsors and grandstand tickets. The rain did hinder some grandstand events and with the economy still sluggish, the board says they may have to cut back a little next year.

"You deal with it. I mean, we're very fortunate compared to what all over the United States is dealing with weather. So, yes we probably cut attendance a little bit by being hot and rainy, but we still had a fun fair," says Larry Schaefer, the Dodge county fair board director.

The board was hoping for an attendance of 40,000 people, but Schaefer says early numbers point towards a lower number of around 30,000. Schaefer says the board still wants to try and keep the fair free of charge.
