GOP candidate's use of nickname 'Doc' challenged

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The GOP candidate for secretary of state wants to appear on the November ballot as Dan "Doc" Severson.

Severson says it was his handle as a Navy fighter pilot, hung on him by fellow flyers because his surname resembles former "Tonight Show" bandleader Doc Severinsen's.

But now the Sauk Rapids state representative is the subject of a complaint that says he's falsely using the name to gain an unfair advantage.

Carol Weiler of Sartell filed a petition with the Minnesota Supreme Court late last month seeking an order that Severson's name appear on the ballot only as Daniel or Dan, not Doc.

Severson acknowledges this is the first time he's used the name Doc politically.

He's running against Democratic incumbent Mark Ritchie.
