Beach party on Peace Plaza

Rochester, MN (KTTC-DT) --

Something is heating up on the Peace Plaza. Trop Rock is kicking off tomorrow. It's a downtown beach party.

"Sand, water, mix. Sand, water, mix. It's not rocket science."

Bert Adams knows sand castles. He's been building them professionally for the past 15 years. In the effort to make Downtown Rochester the best place to be, The Rochester Downtown Alliance and Kahler hotel brought Adams to the city to do what he does best.

"We had success with the ice bar earlier in the year. What's it going to take to put a couple days together, get a little bit more talent here, bring in the sand sculptors, bring in the clam bake, give it a shot," says Scott Greer, Marketing Director for Kahler Hotel.

Trop Rock is a summer beach party featuring music, food, a beach bar, and a whole lot of sand. For the next 3 days, sand artists will be here on the Peace Plaza, designing 10-foot tall sculptures as a way to bring something new to downtown Rochester.

"Sand sculpture is a performance art. So if you have a fantastic sand sculpture next to a mediocre sand sculpture, that the mediocre sand sculpture's got someone working on it, everyone's around the mediocre sculpture," says Adams.

Event organizers say with the winter social-ice event being a big hit, they're excited what Trop Rock will do for the city.

Trop rock will go through Saturday. Tomorrow's Thursdays on First and Third will have less vendors, but a much more beach-like feel to it.
