Lazy D nearly three years later

ALTURA, MN (KTTC-DT) -- Some of that holiday traffic on the road is, no doubt, filled with travelers who's final destination will be a campground.

Today, we visited a campground that no body thought would make it after the floods in August 2007.

But nearly three years later, they've beat those odds.

The Lazy D Campgrounds are packed for the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day weekend.

But just by the looks of it, you'd never guess that three years ago the campground looked like it did after water devastated the area in August of 2007.

"It's flooded in the past but never to the extent that it has this time," said Mark Thoreson.

The floods of 2007 destroyed the Lazy D Campgrounds to the extent that it was even unrecognizable to it's owner Mark Thoreson.

"The roads were washed out and there were ditches or a ravine where the road used to be," said Thoreson.

Three years later as they set up camp for the weekend, these faithful Lazy D customers remember that horrific day when they lost their camper to the raging Whitewater. Now, they set up camp on higher ground.

"I think we got one of the highest spots in the campground too," said one camper.

Some campers say the grounds have come back even better.

"There's a lot more lush grass. And so it's definitely greener and a lot more foilage," said Sherry Steinhoff.

Thorson says it took a lot of work and help from friends and volunteers to get his campground back.

"There was hundreds of loads of rock and sand that was hauled out of here after the flood," said Thoreson.

But on this Memorial Day weekend, with a packed campground, the phone ringing and a long wait list-all that work seems worth it.

"Actually we're doing real well considering how bad it was," said Thoreson.

Thoreson says the other big camping weekends are 4th of July and Labor Day weekend.

But he says this weekend is the busiest.
