Albert Lea Salvation Army grows its own vegetables

ALBERT LEA, MN (KTTC-DT) -- A local Salvation Army employee -- with a love for cooking and gardening -- set out this spring to serve his community in a fresh, new way by developing a community garden.

Ron Meyer is the food service manager at the Albert Lea Salvation Army, his duties include taking care of the food pantry and cooking meals for the community.

This spring, he thought it'd be a great idea to plant a garden at the Salvation Army with a variety of fruits and vegetables that he could use in the meals he makes.

It turned out that Mm any area businesses thought it was a great idea too, and pitched in by donating the seeds, plants, and tools to garden.

"I had this idea to start a true community garden, and so we've started with 14 beds full of vegetables and we're going to share it with the community," said Meyer.

Meyer says it'll probably be another month or so until he can start using the fresh fruits and vegetables in the meals.
