End of Minn. session in sight -- budget deal is not

Posted:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty says the outlines of a budget deal are "in focus" but a hangup over health legislation has bogged down the legislative session's conclusion.

Pawlenty returned Saturday evening to St. Paul for talks with leading lawmakers after spending much of his day in northern Minnesota for the fishing opener.

The Republican governor and Democrat lawmakers are trying to forge a fix to the state's $3 billion budget deficit. But debate over expansion of a health insurance program for the poor with the help of federal money has tied the sides in knots.

Pawlenty says a possible solution might be to put additional programs in more restrictive state programs than the federally sponsored Medicaid plan.
