Independence Party picks PR exec Horner for gov

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) -- The Independence Party is backing former Republican strategist Tom Horner for governor of Minnesota at its convention Saturday in Bloomington.

Horner beat out at least four other candidates, including publisher Rob Hahn, retired business executive John Uldrich, former health administrator Jim Koepke and party activist Chris Pfeifer.

But the battle isn't completely over. Hahn and Uldrich both plan to advance to the primary without the endorsement.

Horner is a founding partner of the public relations firm Himle Horner.

The governor's race is open this year. GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty isn't running for a third term.

The IP hasn't held the governor's office since Jesse Ventura won it in 1998.
