Austin council to consider wind turbines in town

AUSTIN, Minn. (AP) -- The Austin City Council is scheduled to consider an ordinance on Monday evening that would allow the construction of wind turbines throughout town.

The Austin Daily Herald reports Sunday that the controversial issue has been the subject of many meetings since it emerged nearly a year ago.

The council tabled the motion in early February for more discussion, but earlier this month the planning commission approved it.

Now, because the ordinance has been altered since the council last voted on it, an unanimous vote will be needed Monday to pass it.

If passed, each turbine project would need an individual permit and face some restrictions on setbacks and heights, including a 75-foot height limit in residential areas.
