Rain slows 100-mile garage sale event

WABASHA COUNTY (KTTC DT) -- Scattered showers put a damper on an area-wide event that attracts people as far away as California. Called the "100-mile garage sale", communities have been preparing for days.

Cities as far away as Hastings to Wabasha host the event, now in it's 15th-year, which got off to a slow start because of the rain.

Ask Debbie Schreck about weather in Minnesota.

Schreck says, "We've had to do this several years in a row it seems."

And she'll tell you there's no guarantees. That was the case Friday when scattered showers turned steady in Lake City, forcing Schreck, and other garage salers to duck for cover.

The sales opened at 8 a.m. and span 100-miles along Highway 61 in Minnesota and Wisconsin Highway 35.

Tom Krietz, hosting a garage sale says,"If the weather's nice, it's bumper to bumper, all the way around the lake from Red Wing coming down to Lake City and back up."

The 15-year-old event draws bargain shoppers as far away as California.

The NewsCenter spotted everything from old shoes, bar lights, homemade sauerkraut, even a stuffed Caribou head.

Krietz says, "We figure no one will buy it, but it attracts a lot of people."

Krietz is pulling out all the stops, when rain threatens a time these people can pull in at least a thousand dollars a day in sales.

Roger Jevne, Wabasha says, "If it rains, you 'mise well close the doors."

Or as the old Minnesota saying goes, if you don't like the weather, wait a minute, and these salers' future, and pocketbooks, could look a lot less dreary.

KTTC Meteorologist Randy Brock is expecting partly-cloudy skies and a high of 67-degrees for Saturday. That's when the 100-mile garage sale wraps up.
