Free mammograms for women who qualify

ROCHESTER, MN (KTTC DT) -- On Monday, the NewsCenter is launching a two-hour live phone bank at KTTC in partnership with the Minnesota Dept. of Health.

The goal will be to encourage eligible women over age 40 to get free mammograms and pap tests, with the help of the state's Sage Screening Program.

The initiative is an effort to reach uninsured and underinsured women in the battle against breast and cervical cancer.

KTTC will have volunteers from the American Cancer Society and the Sage program here in the NewsCenter answering phones. KTTC will be urging callers to dial the number for the state's Sage program -- it will be forwarded to our switchboard between 5-7 p.m. on Monday so that we can get these calls and so that counselors can do their interviews.

After 7 p.m., the state's phone number will go back to its normal destination.

Until then, one St. Charles man is doing his part and raising money to fight breast cancer. Walt Lange sells wooden owls in a city shop.

He's hand carved every single one of the 1,700 total owls he's made this past year.

He says, his slogan, "Save the Hooters", helps women battling breast cancer laugh off some of the stress.

Last year, Lange donated more than $900 to the Eagles Cancer Telethon.

There's no price tag on the owls, instead Lange just asks for a donation to help fight breast cancer.
