Demmer clinches 1st District GOP endorsement

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) -- State Representative Randy Demmer has won the 1st District Republican endorsement to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Walz.

Demmer clinched the nod after eight rounds of balloting when his sole remaining opponent, former state representative Allen Quist of St. Peter, dropped out. That was after Demmer came within just a few votes on the eighth ballot.

Demmer is a four-term state representative from Hayfield, which is west of Rochester. He says he will challenge Walz for being too liberal for the southern Minnesota district and too closely aligned with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Barack Obama.

Demmer previously sought the 1st District congressional endorsement in 2008 but lost on the first ballot. Walz, of Mankato, was elected in 2006 when he defeated longtime Republican incumbent Gil Gutknecht.
