More than 1,000 MN Guard troops welcomed back

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- More than 1,000 Minnesota National Guard soldiers are getting an official welcome home after a long deployment in Iraq.

A reception and ceremony was planned at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Saturday to welcome back troops from the state's 34th Red Bull Infantry Division.

The 1,200 soldiers were stationed in Basra, Iraq from May 2009 until January this year. They commanded about 14,000 military forces in the southern part of the country.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty was due to speak at the event. He withdrew from a major Republican gathering in New Orleans to attend.
