Time to vote for proposed high-speed train name

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- After public input, a final list of names has been announced for the proposed high-speed passenger rail service to Rochester.

The Southeast Minnesota Rail Alliance says over 284 names were submitted. Tuesday, the Alliance released the list of finalists: "Midwest Flyer", "Red Fox Rail", "Southern Star", "Zumbro Valley Express", "MorningStar", "Southern Rail Express", and "Tristate Express".

Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede, a member of the Alliance, was grateful for the suggestions. "The names submitted noted our unique geological characteristics, rich history, regional wildlife, and notable industries. It was difficult to narrow the list, but we think we found a mix of names that represents the ideas submitted."

Residents interested in voting can visit the Southeast Minnesota Rail Alliance website; there will also be voting at area businesses. Voting will run through February.

Once selected, the name will be used to promote the high-speed passenger rail line that would serve Rochester and neighboring communities. A proposed route would run from Rochester to the Twin Cities, with a likely hub or stop in Dakota County.
