Snow on the way!

(FOX 47) -- Our weather over the past week or so has been cold, but tranquil with sunshine prevailing more often than not.

That quiet trend will change later today as a potent, fast-moving storm system moves in from the northwest, bringing snow to the region.

Expect some light snow, especially west of Interstate 35 for the midday and afternoon hours with an inch or two of late day accumulation possible.

A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect in the early afternoon for those areas as snow will become heavier this evening and tonight.

Six or seven inches of snow will be possible near Mason City and Charles City, Iowa while areas near Rochester, Austin, Wabasha, and Winona will receive three or four inches by tomorrow morning.

The snow will gradually taper off tomorrow with strong winds through the day creating blowing and drifting of snow and thus blizzard-like conditions will be possible.

Arctic air pours in late Thursday night and Friday while the skies will clear in time for the weekend.
