COPY-Man arrested after death of Cannon Falls toddler

CANNON FALLS, Minn. (KTTC-DT) -- A Cannon Falls man has been charged with assault after the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to the Cannon Falls home on July 1, 2009.

When an officer arrived at the home, he was met outside by Justin David Lake, who told the officer that the little girl had fallen off her bed while her mom was at Wal-Mart.

The 2-year-old was taken to Cannon Falls Hosptial and then later airlifted to Saint Marys Hospital.

It was there Mayo Clinic staff told investigators the child's extensive injuries were not consistant with a fall, but consistant with the child being shoved into a door frame or hit in the head with a hard object similar to a baseball bat.

The girl died on Sunday.

On July 2, 2009, Justin David Lake was arrested and formally charged with first degree assault and malicious punishment of a child by the Goodhue County Attorney's Office.  Lake could face additional charges after autopsy results come back.
