Willmar man charged after 100 mph chase

WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) -- A 38-year-old Willmar man says he wasn't trying to flee police Friday night. He claims his accelerator stuck and he drove into a tree to stop the vehicle.

Kandiyohi County prosecutors didn't buy it. They have charged Jose Mares III with fleeing a peace officer, drunken driving, reckless driving and driving after revocation.

Unconditional bail was set at $12,000. His next appearance is May 4.

The criminal complaint says that late Friday, two Willmar officers saw a vehicle speeding through a 30 mph zone and the gave chase.

The pursuit reached 100 mph before the suspect attempted a hard left turn, lost control and struck a tree. The driver ran away, but was later caught.

Mares registered a 0.131 blood-alcohol level on a breath test, above the 0.08 limit for driving.
