Obama talks up wind power on Earth Day in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) -- President Barack Obama is delivering an Earth Day pitch for his alternative energy plan and environmentally friendly jobs in a return to Iowa -- the state that launched him on the road to the White House.

Obama is in Newton, once the home of Maytag Corp., which closed its appliance factory in 2007, costing the city hundreds of jobs.

Obama toured the former Maytag site, which now houses Trinity Structural Towers. The wind energy plant employs about 140 workers.

Obama is touting the plant as a model for job creation and energy production.

The visit comes as Obama's energy legislation has slowed in Congress. Skeptical Republicans and some Democrats from coal-producing states fear the plan will increase costs for consumers, send jobs overseas and hurt businesses.
