Local firefighters head back to school

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- To prevent deadly fires, 500 firefighters brushed up on their training skills this weekend in a program that takes skill, dedication, and passion.

The Minnesota Fire/EMS/Rescue School started simulated courses Saturday at Rochester's Community and Technical College.

Hands-on experience, in a variety of safety courses, are designed to enhance a firefighter's performance in the line of duty.

Once a year, instructors from Riverland Community College sponsor this special training program.

Mark Machacek, Riverland Fire Instructor says, "We have flashover simulators going on, which teach fire fighters how to stay safe in a burning structure; we have classes going on for officers, captains, and chiefs."

Other courses include basic pump operations, auto extrication, and how to read smoke.
