One local woman swims for an ovarian cancer cure

ROCHESTER, MN (FOX 47) -- A Rochester woman is going the distance Saturday, to raise money for ovarian cancer.

55-year-old Mary Johnson jumped in the pool about 8:00 a.m. Saturday, with a goal of swimming for 12 hours straight.

It's all part of the Third Annual "Silent No More Marathon Swim" at the Rochester Area Family Y.

Johnson is dedicating every lap to women with ovarian cancer.

She says the challenge though, isn't swimming.

Mary Johnson says, "Managing time is our biggest challenge. The energy part of it comes and goes, and I'm lucky about that. I trained really hard this year so it's going very well."

More than 25,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year in the United States.

There is no early detection test available.

Organizers hope to raise $12,000 at Saturday's event.
