Breaking The Silence

ROCHESTER (KTTC-DT)-- Last year 35 Minnesotans died as a result of domestic violence and on Sunday evening, a small candle light vigil was held in their memory. The vigil though, was also a show of strength for event organizers who just last week suffered a very personal setback.

"It's very moving to gather tonight and honor those who have suffered," says Margo Grafe who was a victim of domestic violence.

Grafe managed to get away from an abusive husband, and finds it comforting to see her community lending support.

"It brings back memories for me of how serious it was and how lucky I am to be alive," she says.

But the vigil was not only a somber reminder of domestic violence. It also served as a strong showing of determination for a group directly targeted by vandals two weeks ago

"It's not like pumpkins have been taken off of somebody's porch," says organizer Jackie Foley.

Foley spent countless hours designing these headstones that had the names and stories of the 35 Minnesotans who died from domestic abuse last year. Without a trace, the memorial was heisted by a group of heartless thieves.

"I think it's ironic that even in their death...that these victims stories have been silenced," Foley says.

Foley says that a number of local businesses and organizations have already lent support to build a more permanent memorial next year.
