NEW ULM, Minn. (AP) -- New Ulm is hosting a weekend celebration of the ancient warrior Hermann the German, the legendary symbol of strength and unity in preserving freedom.
Hermann's copper likeness, with battle sword drawn, stands atop a 102-foot tall monument in the southern Minnesota city.
New Ulm was settled in the 19th century by Germans who modeled the statue after a similar monument near Detmold, Germany. Hermann was a slave chieftain who turned against his masters and led a struggle to defend German tribes against a Roman imperial army.
Besides a battle re-enactment, exhibits and panel discussions at Martin Luther College, organizers of the weekend event turned to students to add levity with an imitation of the network talk show "The View." Interspersed in the show will be 'breaking news' updates from the Colosseum.
