Minnesota voters say economy, change topped their list of priorities

Posted: Updated:

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota voters were worried about the economy and looking for a president who could change things. They picked Barack Obama.

Preliminary exit polling results showed Obama's support cut across economic and geographic lines in Minnesota.

The majority of voters thought the economy was the top issue facing the nation, and most of them thought Obama was the best candidate on the issue.

Obama managed to split both the Republican-leaning Twin Cities suburbs and the conservative western half of the state, while winning in the Twin Cities and the east.

He also split the vote of voters from families with incomes of $100,000 or more, while taking overwhelming support from those making less.

Self-described independents were about a quarter of the voters, and in the presidential race they broke heavily for Obama.
