One for IBM's Roadrunner

ROCHESTER, MN (KTTC-TV) -- IBM of Rochester has added another award to their long list of accomplishments.

Last Thursday, IBM of Rochester received a Tekne Award for their Roadrunner Super Computer.

In the computer world, the Roadrunner is known for breaking the petaflop barrier. So what exactly does that mean?

Andy Schram, project executive for Roadrunner, says, "It's 10 to the 15th instructions per second; that's about a quadrillion instructions per second, which is about 100 times faster than any of the PCs you might have at home."

Schram says the Roadrunner can be used for anything ranging from weather, to medical simulations, to classified government experiments.

The cost of the Roadrunner - just a measly $100 million.
