Unsettling weather activity was forecast to continue to develop throughout the Mid- and Eastern U.S. on Thursday.
The strong low that was once centered over the Central Plains was expected to lift northeastward into the Mid-Mississippi Valley with a swath of mixed precipitation. While areas of precipitation would continue to develop throughout portions of the Central Plains, the strongest mix of rain and snow were expected to develop on the northern and eastern sides of this low, affecting Upper Midwest and the Ohio Valleys.
Numerous showers and thunderstorms were also expected to develop across the Southeast and the Eastern Valleys as an associated warm front extending across the Great Lakes and the northern Mid-Atlantic pulled Gulf moisture northward. Some of these strong thunderstorms might turn severe during the afternoon due to abundant moisture and increased instability, forecasters said. Heavy rainfall in the Southeast and along the central Gulf Coast also could create periods of flooding and flash flooding throughout the day.
Out West, rain showers and high elevation snow were expected to return to the Pacific Northwest and northern California today as offshore disturbances approached the coast. The remainder of California and most of the Great Basin would stay dry with slightly milder temperatures due to a weak ridge of high pressure.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 4 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 94 degrees at Kingsville Naval Air Station in Texas.
