ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The shipping season on the Mississippi River ended Wednesday, when 12 barges of corn and soybeans were tugged down the river and outside St. Paul's city limits.
The state Department of Transportation says the 2009 season began March 23 and lasted 254 days, the longest season in five years. Mild weather allowed the season to end later this year.
Towing seasons usually end around Thanksgiving because of dangers from ice on the river.
The towboat industry moves 13 million tons of goods and resources in and out of the state during the spring, summer and fall.
