CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- The former manager of an Iowa kosher slaughterhouse who was jailed after his conviction on financial fraud charges is asking a judge to release him on bail.
Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Linda Reade denied bail to former Agriprocessors, Inc., manager Sholom Rubashkin. On Monday, Rubashkin asked Reade to reconsider the ruling. He has volunteered to go under house arrest and wear a GPS monitor.
Rubashkin was convicted Nov. 12 on 86 financial fraud charges. He argues his crimes weren't violent and says he has received thousands of supportive letters from the larger Jewish community.
Rubashkin was released on bail before his conviction, but Reade ruled he is now a greater flight risk.
The fraud convictions follow a May 2008 immigration raid at the plant.
