Turkey or eagle for US symbol?

Associated Press - November 25, 2009 6:14 AM ET

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Would a turkey have made a better national symbol than a bald eagle? It's a question the Minnesota History Center will ponder the day before Thanksgiving.

The History Center in St. Paul will tell the story Wednesday of how Founding Father Benjamin Franklin advocated a turkey instead of a bald eagle as the U.S. symbol.

A costumed actor playing Franklin will be on hand as well as a bird handler from the National Eagle Center in Wabasha. The handler will bring a 10-year-old bald eagle named Angel.

A new exhibit about Franklin opens Friday at the Minnesota History Center.
