Wis., Minn. lawmakers trying to resolve tax reciprocity issue

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- If Wisconsin and Minnesota lawmakers can reach agreement on a tax reciprocity dispute lawmakers in Wisconsin may call a special session to enact the deal.

A spokeswoman for Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker says talks are ongoing but Decker is committed to calling the Senate into session if a deal can be reached.

The Wisconsin Legislature isn't scheduled to come back again until January.

The two states had an agreement that allowed taxpayers who live in one state but work in the other to file one income tax return. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty ended it earlier this year when an agreement with Wisconsin on speeding up its payments couldn't be reached.

Reaching a deal this year would save about 80,000 taxpayers from having to file two returns for the 2010 tax year.
