MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Soldiers from the Wisconsin National Guard's 951st "Sapper" Engineer Company are returning from Afghanistan.
About 100 soldiers from the Tomahawk and Rhinelander-based unit left Wisconsin last November and landed in Afghanistan this past February.
Their tasks included searching for improvised explosives, scouting and gathering identifying data from local residents.
The unit collected 15 Purple Heart medals during the deployment. One member, Sgt. Ryan Adams of Rhinelander, died of injuries from a rocket-propelled grenade attack on Oct. 2.
A welcome-home ceremony for the unit is set for Saturday afternoon at Rhinelander High School.
