HASTINGS, Minn. (AP) -- A judge has sentenced a former Hastings veterans home resident to more than 36 years in prison for killing a fellow resident.
In September, a Dakota County jury convicted 45-year-old Randall Sears of second-degree murder in the death of Richard Jackson. The 54-year-old Jackson died about three weeks after an August 2008 attack by Sears, which left him with extensive head injuries.
Dakota County Judge Edward Lynch sentenced Sears to 440 months in prison on the murder charge and another conviction of assault in the first degree.
The two men were acquaintances at the home.
