MILLVILLE (KTTC-DT)-- It's an idea gaining a lot of popularity with hunters across the state of Minnesota. For the past three years, those who like to hunt deer can actually give back to those in need through a special program setup by the DNR.
"It's very busy, we've been putting a lot of hours in," says Bill. As the height of hunting season approaches though, Bill is putting in a few more hours to help feed those who often times find it difficult to put food on the table. "It's growing in popularity," he says. It all started three years ago, when the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources decided to allow hunters to kill a few extra deer as long as they had it processed and donated to a local food bank. Bill says that, "It makes us feel like we're doing a good deed." The program allows hunters like Carl Liffrig to give back and still enjoy a sport he looks forward to every year. "There's a lot of people who don't have food on the table and we still have a lot left from last year so I figure we might as well help other people out," he says. After Bill and his wrap up, tape up and ship out the freshly processed venison, it's sent to the state to be inspected for safety. Then it arrives at places like the Channel One Food Bank in Rochester, where it's distributed to those who need it most. "It's a good source of protein going to those who need it most," says Vince McCoy from the Food Bank.
