Baby sitter charged in infant's injury

Associated Press - October 1, 2009 6:14 PM ET

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Felony child endangerment charges have been filed against a baby sitter in connection with a brain injury suffered by a 4-month-old.

According to Detective Larry Penland, Watts provided child care in her home for Emiliano Ramirez of Urbandale.

The detective said Emiliano's grandmother picked him up at Watts' residence on Sept. 15, and because he looked pale, was taken to Blank Children's Hospital. Tests determined there were retinal hemorrhages and bleeding of the brain.

Penland said the injuries to Emiliano indicate slamming into a soft surface or shaking.

Authorities say the 34-year-old Watts, who is not a licensed child-care provider, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Watts is the second person charged in Des Moines in recent weeks with inflicting brain injuries to a child. On Friday, police accused 27-year-old Nelson Enrique Rieman of injuring his 5-month-old son.
