ROCHESTER (KTTC-TV) -- Just as dairy farmers struggle to make ends meet with lower prices paid to them for milk, new evidence is out offering clues to the farm economy. Milk production was significantly higher in Minnesota and Iowa in July from the same month a year ago.
In Minnesota, milk production was up 5.9% from July, 2008, with the USDA reporting that 786 million pounds of milk was trucked to creameries and processing plants this July. Production per cow was up, and the number of cows producing milk was also up.
Iowa milk production was also up, even though the number of dairy cows was the same from a year ago. Total milk production was up 4.8% in July from a year ago. The reason: production per cow rose sharply, from an average of 1660 pounds to 1740 pounds of milk per cow.
Across the entire U.S., milk production was only up 0.1% from a year ago.
