Lawmakers examine US Senate recount

Posted:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Now that Minnesota has a second U.S. senator, two state lawmakers are looking back at the state's longest unresolved election for lessons.

Democratic Sen. Ann Rest and Republican Rep. Tom Emmer meet at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute Friday to discuss the state's recount process and legislation to prevent another prolonged contest.

The race between Democrat Al Franken and Republican Norm Coleman lasted nearly eight months until Coleman conceded after the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in Franken's favor. Franken was sworn in on Tuesday.

Rest heads the state Senate committee that oversees elections, while Emmer is the ranking Republican on the House committee for elections.
