U of M's solar decathlon team works to build solar house

Associated Press - May 9, 2009 11:44 AM ET

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Members of the University of Minnesota's "solar decathlon team" are firing up their tools as they start building a house that will be powered only by the sun.

The team hopes to have the house finished by July 1, for display on the East Bank campus. It's being built in three modules for easier transport.

In October, they'll transport the 800-square-foot house to Washington, D.C., to compete against 19 other schools in a biennial national competition.

The house includes a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room and porch. Project manager Ann Johnson says it will look like a regular residential home.

The team expects it will cost about $400,000 to build the house. After the competition, it will be brought back for tours and educational visits.
