Groceries for half the cost!

Posted:
CLAREMONT, MN (KTTC-DT) Others are stepping up to help people bounce back and survive being laid off.

Whether you're feeding a family of four or just yourself, the price of groceries, these days, really adds up.

So maybe it's no shocker that just in the past two weeks, dozens of Rochester area families have jumped at the chance to stretch their food budgets without having to sacrifice much.

It's a program from an organization called Angel Food Ministries, and they're doing what they can to help customers cut costs.

For just $30 once a month, a non-profit organization, Angel Food Ministries delivers a box full of food.

"It's available to anyone so people who just like to save money on their grocery bill and would like to spend that money in other spots," says Claremont Coordinator Penny McMartin-Obrin.

Churches like First Presbyterian in Claremont distribute and handle food orders then once a month customers pick-up their box.

"We're paying for everything in advance, and so you're paying for your box and we're just cutting out the middle man," says McMartin-Obrin.

Just this month, Angel Food Ministries opened a new location in Rochester.

"We've had approximately 125 people sign-up, which far exceeded our expectations," says Rochester director Mike Smith.

It's a good deal whether you're recently unemployed or just looking to save some cash.

"It's an opportunity to get the same type of food you'd buy at the grocery store every month for a substantially reduced price," says Smith.

You're still getting high quality meats, vegetables and desserts, but at a lower cost.

"This is not just for people who are economically distressed. It's available to everyone, it doesn't matter if you're unemployed, it doesn't matter if you make a great income," says Smith.

For $30 once a month you get about $60 worth of groceries.

One box of food can feed a family of four up to one week or if you're single it could last you the entire month.

For the first time in Rochester, food will be distributed March 28th at the Assembly of God Church on 18th Avenue Northwest.

The group will take food orders every Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
