The Minnesota Twins had a humiliating weekend--they entered Friday with a two game lead on the defending American League champion Cleveland Indians, and five games over .500.   After Sunday afternoon, they were two games out of first place, only a game over .500 and have a record of 0-7 versus the Indians on their home field, and 2-8 overall.

The Minnesota Twins used a five-run first inning, and an excellent start from Jose Berrios (W, 6-1) to take a 6-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.  The win gave the team a series split, and gives them their 34th win over a month before reaching that win total last season when they won their 34th game on July 19th.

The Minnesota Twins franchise high 28-hit performance and Eddie Rosario's three-homers powered the Twins to a 20-7 win over the visiting Seattle Mariners Tuesday night.  After giving up three quick runs in the first and second to be down 3-0, the Twins answered with four in the second, seven in the third, one in the fourth, and then seven again in the seventh, before scoring their final run in the ninth.

This past Friday, Winona softball did something it had never done before, win the state championship, and the school's first girls team state title since 1989. "We started out 2-3, and I think a lot of us were unhappy with how that started. Especially us seniors. We're kind of panicking and like 'oh no, we have a big goal and we want to reach it' and so we were kind of worried, but everything turned out how we wanted it to turn out," said senior Ashton Hoeppner.

Twins make 1st pick, then get crushed by Seattle 14-3

On a night in which the Minnesota Twins made their first number one overall draft pick since 2001 when they selected Joe Mauer, the team on the field was unable to send the fans home with good feelings, as the Twins got shellacked 14-3 at the hands of the Seattle Mariners.  The Twins drafted high school shortstop Royce Lewis with the 1st pick in the MLB Draft.

The Rochester Lourdes High School baseball team needed to sweep La Crescent to go the State Class AA Tournament and they did just that on Tuesday evening winning game one 14-1 and game two 5-4.  Wabasha-Kellogg defeated Hayfield 3-2 to go on to compete in the Class-A State Tournament.

This past week at sectionals, Century senior Katie Eidem dominated. She won the high jump, as well as the 200 and 400 in record times. Eidem has a state title in sight. "I've always had a state championship title on my mind. Sectional Championships were up for grabs throughout southeast Minnesota on Thursday.  The Class 1AA Championship between Lourdes and Zumbrota-Mazeppa ended with Z-M defeating Lourdes 7-2 and denying them their first ever trip to the State Tournament.  In Class 1AAA sectional title game, Winona shut out Stewartville 3-0.  In the Class 1A Championship. Hayfield won the sectional title for a third straight year defeating Wabasha-Kellogg 7-2.

Sectional Track meets were Thursday with PEM boys and Byron girls taking the Section 1A titles.  In Section 1AA three Century athlete grabbed section Championships prior to the Track and Field Finals Saturday, and former Athlete of the Week Antonio Judson-Red Elk won the 3200.

More than 1000 fans watched at Mayo Field Thursday night as a scene developed that was all too reminiscent of the 2016 Rochester Honkers season--the home team's pitching being battered while the bats lie dormant.  As was the story numerous times last season.  The Honkers could get the offense going mustering seven hits but no runs, while they gave up 12 runs on 14 hits, and committed four errors in a 12-0 beatdown at the hands of the St. Cloud Rox.

Rochester Mayo and Caledonia hire new coaches

Rochester Mayo High School announced Thursday that Tom Brown is the new Head Boy's Basketball Coach taking over for Rick Canton who resigned after just one year at Mayo.  Meanwhile, Brad King will take over the Boy's Basketball Head Coaching duties in Caledonia.  King replaces Josh Diersen who stepped down in May. King is the father of Warrior standouts Owen and Noah King.

Scott Stevens leaves Wild staff after one year for family time

Minnesota Wild assistant coach Scott Stevens has resigned after one year with the team, citing a desire to spend more time with his family in New Jersey. The Hall of Fame defenseman played 13 of his 22 seasons in the NHL for New Jersey while captaining the team to three Stanley Cup championships.

Last week at the Dick Norman Invite, the John Marshall track team blasted off, winning the 4x100 meter relay in a record-setting performance.  Leading the charge for JM is senior sprinter Shahan Ameen, KTTC NewsCenter Sports' Athlete of the Week. "We took second at the Hamilton Elite meet, realistically speaking that means we're second in the state right now" said Ameen.  John Marshall's track team oozes confidence as it chases its state title aspirations.
